Bush Candles is a compact low growing form of banksia spinulosa; this plant displays a mass of striking golden cylindrical candle like flower heads that appear above foliage from autumn through to winter. 'Bush Candles' provides nectar for birds and bees over the cooler months and is suitable for any garden that requires low informal or structured plantings.

POSITION: Bush Candles grows best in full sun and is suitable for temperate to sub tropical climates and is adaptable to most well drained soils.

CONDITIONS: Soil pH: 4.5 to 6.5

Soil preparation: Soil can range from quite acid to alkaline in pH levels, it is important to have good soil preparation to gain the best results when planting natives. This improves the water-holding capacity of the soil and for young plants, once established, will have lower water requirements.

CARE: This compact small shrub requires little maintenance other than to remove spent flowers and can be tip pruned if required. It is best to initially feed with a slow release low phosphorus fertiliser to help establish the plant when first planted and to supplement with iron if leaves begin to yellow. Mulching around the base of the plant will help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

USES: Bush Candles attractive compact habit with soft foliage and an array of massed flowers in the cooler months can be used for borders and would be excellent for coastal gardens or for potted winter colour.
